The Japanese R sound

For the past month, I have learning the Japanese language for fun. When I would hear the Japanese R sound through various language learns programs, wouldn’t completely understand how to say the sound. As it turns the Japanese R doesn’t even really exist!

It is a cross between the D and the L sound. The way I understand it, is that L sound is made by placing your tongue behind your top front teeth. The Japanese R sounds is made by placing it higher up on the gums right behind your top front teeth. Below is a video that explains it really well and gives you an execise so you can learn to say the Japanese R sound. Thank you Tofugu!!!
